Rahul Gandhi’s decisions led to divisions within the Opposition: CPI
Decisions taken by Rahul Gandhi led to divisions within the opposition, CPI national secretary Atul Kumar Anjaan said Thursday and asserted that the policies of the Congress scion opened the doors for Narendra Modi’s victory. Riding on a massive Modi wave sweeping through most parts of India, the BJP was set to return to power Thursday as it led in 292 seats while the Congress trailed far behind with 50, according to trends released by the Election Commission for all 542 seats that went to polls. “The BJP fought these elections on the basis of social and religious divisive policies and the agenda was set by them on this basis. “But more significant is the fact that the unity of the opposition has been damaged by the Congress. The policies and decisions of Rahul Gandhi has weakened opposition unity, led to divisions and opened the doors for Modi’s victory,” the Communist Party of India national secretary said. BJP, allies hail Modi ‘tsunami’; all losers are not losers, says Mamata
NEW DELHI: With the BJP heading for a historic win in the Lok Sabha polls, senior ministers and alliance partners credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah for the victory described by many as a “tsunami”. While there was euphoria in the BJP-led NDA camp, both the Congress and the Left parties were muted in their reactions after the trends clearly showed that they were heading towards another poll debacle after 2014. However, TMC and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s reaction to the poll outcome was pragmatic.”Congratulations to the winners. But all losers are not losers. We have to do a complete review and then we will share our views with you all. Let the counting process be completed fully and the VVPATs matched,” she tweeted. Riding on a massive Modi wave sweeping through most parts of India, the BJP was set to return to power Thursday as it led in 298 seats while the Congress trailed far behind with 52, according to trends released by the Election Commission for all 542 seats that went to polls. Bengal analysis: The fight in Bengal seems to be a bipolar one
As trends are coming from all 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, the electoral fight in Bengal seems to be a bipolar one as predicted by ET, pushing Congress and CPM as mere fringe players. As of now , TMC is leading in 24 seats and BJP is leading in 17 seats restricting Congress to 1 seat . This is tbe first ever election in Bengal that is left with no Left. The rout for CPM looks complete in this election as the vote share for the party has come down to mere 6% from around 29% in 2014 . Even though West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s prediction about BJP ‘s numbers went haywire , her political mind perhaps identified the BJP- CPM understanding in terms of vote transfer correctly . While BJP leader Mukul Roy expected around 12 to 15 % of vote transfer from CPM, it appears that more than 20% votes from the Left went to BJP leading to this landslide numbers for BJP in Bengal . There regions gave maximum dividend to BJP — north Bengal, western part of the state, that is the tribal belt and the border constituencies . With BJP leading in Indo-Bangladesh border constituencies—- Ranaghat, Krishnanagar, Bongaon — it seems citizenship amendment bill and NRC campaigns by PM Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah have been a hit .

According to the EC, the vote share is 43.5 % for Bharatiya Janta Party and 44.7 % is for Trinamool Congress. Left Front is at 7% as of now. This statistic appears to very significant in the first round of counting as it indicates towards a transfer of votes from Left to BJP, and this can be the primary reason for BJP’s rise in Bengal.09:21 AM

Counting underway for 42 LS seats in West Bengal
Counting of votes for the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal began on Thursday in 58 counting centres across the state. Around 25,000 counting personnel have been deployed by the Election Commission for deciphering the mandate that lies locked in the EVMs from 78,799 polling stations spread over 294 Assembly segments.
The counting started with the postal ballots, following which the EVMs would be opened. Once the counting of votes polled in the EVMs is over, five random VVPATs of each Assembly segment will be tallied with the voting machines in the presence of the counting observers. According to an official, the counting of voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT), the counting of postal ballots, votes in the EVMs and the scanning of Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballots System (ETPBS), will make the process lengthy.

NDA will face defeat, Left’s strength to increase: CPI-M
A day before the 2019 poll results, CPI-M’s West Bengal Secretary Surjya Kanta Misra on Wednesday said the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will be defeated and the strength of leftist forces will increase across the country, proving the exit polls predictions incorrect.
The exit polls predicted a thumping victory for the NDA and projected that the Left parties will witness a sharp decline in their seat share across the country, including in Bengal, in the 2019 polls.
“No matter what is shown in the exit polls, we believe that the BJP-led NDA will be defeated, an alternative secular government will be formed and the strength of leftist forces will increase,” Misra told reporters here.
“The number and the public mandate is a big thing in any election, keeping that in mind we are saying the leftist forces will increase both its strength as well as the number of seats,” he said.
Referring to the exit polls after 2004 elections which predicted a victory for the NDA, only to be proven wrong after the results, Misra said that “whenever the exit polls predicted a BJP victory, it has actually lost the elections”.
However, when asked how many seats the Left parties may win in Bengal, the CPI-M leader refused to quote any specific number. (IANS)

Violence has become common in West Bengal, says SC
Violence has become common in West Bengal with some people fighting without any issue and these people who indulge in arson and rioting do not belong to any political party, the Supreme Court said on Thursday. A vacation bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice M.R. Shah made the observation while granting protection from arrest, till May 28, to BJP candidate Arjun Singh, who is contesting from the state’s Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency. “We grant the insulation to the petitioner that no coercive action shall be taken against the petitioner in the cases which have been registered against him so far and in which his arrest is required. No arrest shall be made in the cases filed against him for the period commencing from today i.e. from May 22 till May 28,” the court said.07:30 AM
Over 25,000 personnel deployed for LS vote count in Bengal
Bringing the climax to the high-voltage Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal – which has virtually become the ground zero of the current elections following the BJP’s mega push to become a big player in the state – the authorities will on Thursday count the votes for the state’s 42 seats, that could make a big impact in deciding the national outcome. The interest is centred around the extent up to which the BJP can make inroads in the state where it has been a fringe player all these years and whether the Mamata Banerjee- led ruling Trinamool Congress manages to hold its fort in the face of the sustained assault by the saffron brigade through the election campaign. With the various exit polls predicting anything between five and 23 seats for the BJP, the saffron camp is all keyed up, while the Trinamool has been utterly dismissive of the projections, with Banerjee dubbing them “gossip” and a “game plan to manipulate and replace thousands of EVMs”.07:28 AM

West Bengal will have bearing on BJP national strategy
The poll research unit of BJP and the RSS have a conservative estimate of around 15 to 20 seats in the state which will have a significant bearing on their national poll strategy. According to a senior leader in the party, the election is all about what BJP loses in Uttar Pradesh and gains in Bengal.07:25 AM
BJP claims it will get 23 in West Bengal
Six months back, in December, Bharatiya Janta Party’s national president Amit Shah predicted 23 seats of 42 for his party in West Bengal. Since then, in every public meeting, he put it on record that his party will be surging ahead in Bengal with almost two dozen seats, more than half of total 42 in the state. As late as last week, he repeated the same tally for his party in Bengal while addressing a press conference in Delhi, flanked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
